What You Need to Do Before December 31 (If You’re 73+)

The end of the year is more than holidays and celebrations, it’s RMD season for many retirees.

If you’re age 73 or older (or turning 73 in 2025), the IRS expects you to withdraw a certain amount from your retirement accounts before December 31.

We usually recommend waiting until later in the year to take your RMD, because your required amount is based on your December 31 value from the previous year. That way, any growth during the year stays in your account longer, working for you, not the IRS.

👉 If you’re not sure whether this applies to you, or if you have multiple IRAs that need to be coordinated, let’s review your accounts before year-end.

It’s a simple step that can make a big difference in your tax picture.
